Age grading - how a 3+ grade is decided for a wooden toy
Age grading is a judgement about the child, not the price or the theme. Four factors drive it: the smallest part, the play pattern and rules, the physical ability the toy demands, and the materials and finish. The market's rules then decide the label and warnings that go with the grade.
The four factors
| Factor | Question | Effect on the grade |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest part | Can any part detach and fit the small-parts cylinder? | Small part means 3+ with warning, not under 3 |
| Play pattern | Does it need reading, rules or multi-step planning? | Complex rules push the grade higher |
| Physical ability | Does it need fine control or strength? | Higher control needs a higher grade |
| Materials and finish | Are parts safe for mouthing, and is the finish stable? | Mouthing materials can support a lower grade only where the design allows |
Set-level grading
- A set takes the strictest grade of its parts.
- One small part in an otherwise 3+ set makes the set 3+ with a warning; it does not move the set below 3.
- A game with reading rules is graded for the reading level, not the box size.
- Mixed sets sold to schools state the grade of each component on the packing list.
What can change a grade
- A new color, finish or material that was not in the tested configuration.
- A redesigned part that detaches more easily.
- A shorter or longer cord, strap or handle.
- New packaging that changes the intended age, such as a set for older children.
Questions buyers ask
- Is 3+ the same as 3-6?
- A 3+ toy can be used from age three; a 3-6 grade describes the age range the product is intended for, which decides the small-parts warning requirement.
- Can a 3+ toy be used in a mixed 3-5 room?
- Yes, provided the model is graded 3+ and the smallest part is labelled where the rules require it. Mixed rooms should use 3+ models only.
- Who is responsible for the grade?
- The manufacturer or importer sets the grade and the label. We provide the design and part data behind the grade.
